The Dark Night of the Soul: Why Spiritual Awakening Feels Like Falling Apart
There comes a quiet, terrifying point on the path of inner growth when everything you built simply stops working.
The morning routines that used to ground you suddenly feel meaningless. Your career goals lose their spark. Friendships you’ve had for years feel distant, and the life you spent decades constructing starts to look like a stage set you no longer want to perform on.
You aren’t necessarily depressed. You aren’t failing at life. You are in the middle of a Dark Night of the Soul.
First named by 16th-century Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross (La noche oscura del alma), the Dark Night isn’t a badge of honor, nor is it a sign of spiritual dysfunction. It is the raw, unvarnished collapse of the ego—a mandatory threshold every soul crosses before real transformation occurs.
The Void Nobody Prepares You For
Most spiritual advice promises clarity, peace, and elevated joy. What they rarely tell you is that before you can step into an authentic version of yourself, the old, conditioned self has to disintegrate.
During a Dark Night, the mental maps you used to navigate the world crumble. You step into a void where standard self-help tricks—affirmations, positive thinking, or forcing motivation—fail completely. Why? Because those tools belong to the very ego that is currently being dismantled.
You might notice three distinct shifts:
Identity Disconnect: A quiet realization that your job title, social roles, and past achievements were never who you actually were.
The Death of Old Desires:
Ambitions that used to drive you suddenly feel hollow, leaving an empty space you don’t yet know how to fill.
Existential Isolation: A profound sense of being untethered, as if you are standing alone in deep water with no land in sight.
Clearing the Noise: Awakening, Kundalini, and Enlightenment
Much of the distress surrounding the spiritual path comes from lumping every inner experience into the same bucket. To find your footing, it helps to understand the distinct milestones along the journey.
Not the same:
- Spiritual Awakening (The Perspective Shift)
An awakening is the moment you realize you are not merely your mind, your thoughts, or your conditioning—you are the conscious observer behind them. It is the initial “waking up” from autopilot. It is also usually what triggers a Dark Night, because once you see through the illusions of your old life, you can no longer live in them comfortably.
2. Kundalini Awakening (The Energetic Restructuring)
While spiritual awakening is a shift in perspective, a Kundalini awakening is visceral and physiological. In Eastern traditions, Kundalini is evolutionary energy seated at the base of the spine. When activated, it clears energetic blockages along the chakras, forcing buried emotional trauma and suppressed patterns to the surface in an intense purification process.
3. Enlightenment (The Abiding Truth)
If awakening is a glimpse and Kundalini is the cleanup crew, enlightenment (Moksha or Non-Dual Realization) is the final stabilization. It isn’t a state of permanent euphoria—it is simply the quiet, permanent end of the illusion that you were ever a separate, isolated self.
The Breakdown:
Spiritual Awakening: You see through the illusion.
Dark Night: The illusion burns away.
Kundalini: The energy clears the wreckage.
Enlightenment: You realize nothing was ever lost.
How to Navigate the Darkness
When you are in the thick of a Dark Night, your instinct will be to fix it, run from it, or search frantically for an exit. But the darkness isn’t a room to escape—it is a cocoon.
Stop Fighting the Stillness: Suffering comes from trying to hold onto a version of yourself that has already expired.
Surrender to the pause.
Get Back into Your Body: When your mind feels untethered, double down on physical grounding. Eat simple, nourishing food, take daily walks on the earth without your phone, and prioritize sleep.
Allow the Vacuum: Resist the urge to quickly fill the void with new distractions, spiritual shopping, or fresh habits. In alchemy, this stage is called Nigredo—the blackening—where raw materials must sit in the dark before turning into gold.
The Dawn
The Dark Night of the Soul does not last forever, though while you are in it, time seems to lose its meaning. Eventually, the air clears. You step out of the void lighter, quieter, and fundamentally untethered from the illusions that once controlled you.
You don’t emerge with all the answers. You emerge with something far better: a deep, steady peace that no longer depends on external circumstances.
