Every sadhak knows this drowning. Sadhana was rising, then desire, fear, old trauma or tamas pulled you under. You are not in the world, you are under it, in Patal Lok, the watery subconscious where time moves slow and light does not reach.
This is when Varaha comes. The devas cannot reach her.
In the Purana, Hiranyaksha drags Bhudevi, the Earth, into the cosmic waters. Vishnu becomes Varaha, the wild boar, dives into the depths, slays the demon and lifts Earth on his snout.
Tantra reads Bhudevi as your Muladhara, your grounded self. Hiranyaksha is the golden eyed hunger that drags you down.
Patal Lok is not a place, it is a state
The Patalas are subterranean knots below Muladhara, where samskaras live as serpents.
You enter them when Kundalini descends instead of rising. Signs are classic: heavy sleep after mantra, sexual dreams that drain, sudden greed or victimhood, sadhana feels underwater.
Willpower cannot lift you here, because willpower is what drowned. Only grace that knows how to swim in mud can help.
Why a boar, why not a swan
Varaha is not delicate. He is earth that learned to move in water.
The boar roots in mud with his snout, he is not afraid of dirt. This is the exact quality needed for Patal Lok. A sattvic deity would stay clean and distant. Varaha dives into your filth, finds the lost Bhudevi of your soul, and carries her without disgust.
His four legs are the four Vedas, his tusks are jnana and vairagya, his snort is pranava. He does not negotiate. He kills the captivation at its root.
Tantrik Astrology of the rescue
8th house and 12th house: the waters. Afflicted Moon in the 8th, Ketu in the 12th, or Shani transiting the 4th often marks a Patal period.
Mars: Varaha shakti. Mars as the boar, the red protector who can fight in mud. A weak Mars gives panic in the depths, a propitiated Mars gives the upward thrust.
Venus as Bhudevi: In Tantrik Jyotisha, Bhudevi is the earthy face of Lakshmi, Shukra grounded. When Venus is combust or with Rahu, Bhudevi is kidnapped, wealth and self worth sink together.
Ketu: Hiranyaksha, the golden eye of delusion. Ketu affliction brings the strange fascination with the depths, you know it is harming you, yet you watch.
Varaha Yoga forms when Mars protects Venus from Saturn and Ketu, earth lifted from water by fire.
How he picks you
You do not invoke Varaha with flowers. You invoke him with honesty.
Admit you are underwater. Chant his name from the mud, not from the pedestal. Visualize his snout under your spine, lifting Muladhara gently from the dark waters to the surface.
He will not bring you to heaven. He will bring you back to earth, to your asana, to your next breath. That is enough. From earth, you can rise again.
When Patal Lok captivates, the divine does not wait on the shore. He dives.
