Some people do not want your love. They want the evidence of it.
They will draw you close enough to feel, but not close enough to be reached. They will ask for honesty, for intensity, for the kind of devotion that leaves you exposed, and they will stand just outside of it, watching. Your overwhelming emotion becomes their shelter. As long as you are pouring, they do not have to question their own emptiness. As long as you are drowning, they get to feel like the shore.
It rarely begins as cruelty. It begins as curiosity, as attention. They listen a little longer than others do. They make you feel chosen.
And so you go deeper. You share the things you do not tell everyone. You love a little more recklessly than you intended. You think this is intimacy building. What you do not see is that the depth is one-sided. You were invited into the water, but they never intended to swim.
This is how attachment becomes darkness. Not because love itself is dark, but because you are navigating it alone while believing you are together.
Why Your Chaos Feels Safe to Them
To be loved overwhelmingly, without having to return it in equal measure, is intoxicating. It quiets a particular ego hunger: I am worth losing oneself for.
Your messages, your longing, your jealousy, your tenderness, all of it becomes proof. They do not have to do the difficult work of becoming vulnerable themselves, because your vulnerability does enough work for two people. Your chaos gives them a sense of control. They can predict you. They can calm you or unsettle you with a single delayed reply.
Safety, for them, is not mutual trust. Safety is remaining untouched while being adored.
When Love Asks for a Name
Every bond eventually asks to be named. Are we together? What is this? Where is this going?
This is the moment they disappear. Not always physically, but emotionally. The language turns foggy. “I’m not good at this.” “I have my own issues.” “I didn’t mean for it to become this serious.”
They hide behind weakness because weakness cannot be argued with. If they said, “I enjoyed being worshipped but I do not want to be responsible for you,” it would be honest and it would be damning. So they choose a softer story, one where they are too broken, too confused, too afraid. You are left to comfort the person who wounded you.
To name it would be to owe it something. And owing was never part of the arrangement they imagined.
Bondage, Not Bonding
What forms in this space is not bonding. Bonding requires two people willing to be claimed and to claim in return. What forms here is bondage, a tie that binds only one.
You are bound by memory, by hope, by the version of them that existed when they were still inviting you in. They are bound to nothing but the feeling of being essential to someone.
And that is why it hurts in such a specific way. You were not rejected at the start. You were encouraged at the start and abandoned in the middle.
If you have lived this, the question to carry forward is not “why wasn’t I enough?” You were more than enough, that was the problem. Your enough-ness was used as light while they decided whether they wanted to leave the dark.
Real love does not watch you drown to feel safe. It gets wet.
