They are called Pancha Brahma, the five faces corresponding to five activities: creation, preservation, destruction, concealing grace and revealing grace. The Pancha-Brahma mantras in the Taittiriya Aranyaka X.17-21 of the Krishna Yajurveda exalt Shiva through these five forms: Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Ishana. They also govern the five elements and five directions, and correspond to the five syllables na-mah-shi-va-ya.

The five in plain language

Sadyojata is the creator in earth, west. He is new birth after exhaustion. Choose him when Lagna or Lagna lord is weak, Jupiter is afflicted, or a new dasha is starting and you need to build again.

Vamadeva is the preserver in water, north. He holds mind, family and love together. Choose him when Moon or Venus is afflicted or the 4th house is stressed. Shiva is the traditional remedy for an afflicted Moon, whether influenced by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars.

Aghora is dissolution in fire, south. He is Rudra, the fierce healer who burns what binds. Choose him in Rahu Mahadasha, Sade Sati, 8th house activation, or Moon in Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha or Mula. For Ardra natives the classical advice is worship of Shiva as Rudra, Rudra Ashtakam or Om Namah Shivaya, and Rudrabhishek.

Tatpurusha is the hidden yogi in air, east. He veils the senses so you can see inward. Choose him in Ketu or Mercury affliction, 12th house emphasis, or mental overload that needs dharana, not more action.

Ishana is grace in ether, upward. He is not for problem solving but for liberation. In Jaimini, the Sun as indicator points to Shiva, and if the twelfth from Karakamsa holds Sun with Ketu, the Ishta Devata is Shiva. Choose him when the 9th or 12th house is strong and the question is moksha, not management.

The precision behind it

Tantra astrology uses three anchors. First, mantra shastra gives the five names and functions. Second, Nakshatra shastra gives exact location: Mrigashira is 23°20 Taurus to 6°40 Gemini, ruled by Mars, deity Soma; Ardra is 6°40 to 20°00 Gemini, ruled by Rahu, deity Rudra. Third, Jaimini gives Ishta Devata from the 12th from Karakamsa.

You do not have one fixed Shiva face. Dasha, gochara and affliction show which kriya is active now, and you worship that face to cooperate with it.
