She does not stop
being Shakti when she walks away. She becomes the truth that remains when union
is refused.

There are two faces
of this refusal in our stories, and both are worshipped as wisdom.

Dhumavati: the
hunger that eats the witness

Once Sati, dwelling
with Shiva in the Himalayas, became seized by extreme hunger and asked him for
food. When he delayed, she said, then I will eat you, and she swallowed Shiva,
thus widowing herself. He persuaded her to disgorge him, and then condemned her
to assume the form of the widow Dhumavati.

That is why she is
always considered a widow, and thus, is the only Mahavidya without a consort.
Though associated with Shiva, having eaten him, he has since left her.

In tantra she is
the feminine principle devoid of the masculine principle, Shakti without Shiva
as a pure potential energy without any will to motivate it. Her act is read as
self assertion, and perhaps independence, and she is known as the eternal widow,
the Shakti without Shiva.

What happens then
is smoke. No fire to cook, no witness to direct. She sits at the edge, old,
alone, inauspicious to the world but supremely auspicious to the seeker. She
teaches what remains when desire has eaten even consciousness: stillness
without comfort, clarity without creation.

Sita: the earth
that refuses the throne

Sita’s refusal is
softer, but no less final. Following her trials, Sita chooses to return to
Mother Earth rather than assert her rights as Rama’s wife. Asked to return as
queen, she rebuts him and disappears into the yawning earth, and this refusal
is equivalent to a public rejection of Rama as her husband.

Years later, asked
to prove herself again in Ayodhya, Sita refuses another trial. She calls to her
mother and the earth opens to receive her.

She does not become
smoke, she becomes source. She returns to Bhudevi. Rama remains as king, but
dharma without Shakti becomes rule without heart.

What this means for
the inner Parvathi

With Shiva, Shakti
is Parvathi, Bhuvaneshwari, Kamakhya, the mother who builds worlds. Without
Shiva, by choice or by hunger, she is Dhumavati or Sita absorbed, complete in
herself but outside relationship.

This is not a fall.
Dhumavati is still a Mahavidya. Sita is still the goddess. But creation pauses.
Energy without witness cannot play, it can only wait or burn.

So ask gently
within: have you swallowed your own stillness in hunger to be seen, fed,
validated? Have you refused your own Shiva because proving yourself again feels
like death? If so, honor the Dhumavati in you, honor the Sita in you, but know
their cost.

The widow sees
truth. The bride creates worlds. The wise woman knows when to be which, and
when to return.
