We have reduced virginity to a medical fact. A membrane. A past event.
Devi restores its original meaning. She is not virgin because she hasn’t been touched. She is virgin because nothing can touch her.
The word we lost
In Sanskrit, virgin is not just virgin. It is Kanya, Kumari, Akshata.
Kanya means one who shines on her own. Ka means to shine.
Kumari means one who is complete in herself. She does not need another to be whole.
Akshata means unbroken, unwounded. Not broken by the world.
This is why the same Goddess can be called Mother of all and Nitya Kumari, eternally virgin, at the same time. How? Because her motherhood does not take away her wholeness. She contains everything, but nothing contains her.
Mother and Virgin at once – The great paradox
In the West, a mother cannot be a virgin. In India, Devi must be both.
At Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of Bharat, she stands as a young girl waiting for Shiva, but she is also Bhadrakali, the fierce protector. In Navratri, we worship a 9-year-old girl as Devi on Ashtami – Kumari Puja – not because her body is pure, but because her mind has not yet learned hatred, pretense, jealousy, and cunning.
Her soul is still Akshata.
What does virgin from soul actually mean?
- Untouched from within.
A soul-virgin is not touched by what passes through it. Anger comes, but does not stain. Greed knocks, but does not enter. Like water on a lotus leaf. The Devi Bhagavata says Devi is Niranjana – she in whom no color of the world can mix.
- Un-owned.
This is the deepest meaning. A virgin in soul belongs to no one. Not to a man, not to society’s opinion, not to her own ego. Durga goes to war alone. She does not ask for permission. She does not borrow weapons, she manifests them. She is not defined as someone’s wife or daughter. She is defined as herself.
Patriarchy asked, “Is she untouched by a man?” Tantra asks, “Is she untouched by Maya?”
- One-pointed.
Devi as Brahmacharini, the second Navdurga, is not just celibate. Brahma means the absolute, charini means one who moves in it. Every thought, every breath moves only in Truth. No second agenda. No split mind. That is virginity of intention. What she thinks, what she says, what she does is one straight light.
Why this matters now
We all know what it feels like to lose soul-virginity. When we start doing things to be liked. When we hold resentment. When we watch something impure and let it live in our mind for days.
Reclaiming it is not about becoming naive or prudish. It is about becoming whole again.
The rishis gave a simple practice: Keep one part of your day Akshata. One hour where your mind is not for sale. No scrolling, no gossip, no comparison, no performing. Just you, sitting with yourself. Lit like a diya in a quiet room. That hour slowly cleans the rest.
Devi is not asking us to worship her purity. She is reminding us that we already have it somewhere inside. Buried under noise, but still unbroken.
She is virgin not because the world hasn’t touched her, but because she never let the touch become her identity.
And that is a virginity no one can take from you.
