Let’s read it the way Agastya meant it to be heard, not as praise of a distant god but as nyasa, placing the sun inside the body.
The Stotra has 31 verses and sits in the 107th chapter of the Yuddha Kanda. In tantra it works in three layers at once: outer Sun as witness, inner Sun as prana, and innermost Sun as pure awareness. I will keep to the core verses where the kavacha is actually built.
- The field of battle: the depleted warrior
Tato yuddha parishrantam samare chintaya sthitam |
Ravanam chagrato drishtva yuddhaya samupasthitam ||
Ram is not losing to arrows. He is caught in chinta, anxious thought.
Tantrically this is Manipura kshaya. Long war has emptied the navel fire. When Manipura drops, the mind loops and the ten indriyas scatter. This is why a Suryavanshi needs Surya: lineage cannot fight when the inner fire is low. The Stotra begins as medicine for *vishada, not as philosophy.
Target: Manipura chakra. Vritti: chinta, dainya, self doubt.
- The initiation
Aditya hridayam punyam sarva shatru vinashanam |
Jayavaham japen nityam akshayam paramam shivam ||
Punyam means that which purifies the hridaya. Shatru is not Ravana yet. In tantra the first enemies are antar shatru: laziness, fear, resentment.
Jayavaham is key. It does not say it gives victory outside. It carries the bhava of victory inside.
Target: Anahata, the heart space. Vritti burned: shoka, bhaya. The kavacha begins here: when the heart is lit, the aura stops leaking.
- The promise of integration
Sarva mangala mangalyam sarva papa pranashanam |
Chinta shoka prashamanam ayur vardhanam uttamam ||
Note the order. First chinta shoka prashamanam, quieting of worry and grief, then ayur vardhanam, lengthening of life force. Tantra reads ayus as unobstructed prana, not years.
Papa here is papa vritti, the contraction that makes the senses turn into vikaras.
Target: Pranamaya kosha, Samana vayu. Vikaras touched: moha, depression, tamas.
- The direction of worship
Rashmimantam samudyantam devasura namaskritam |
Pujayasva vivasvantam bhaskaram bhuvaneshvaram ||
Samudyantam, the rising one. Agastya does not say worship the noon sun. The rising sun is the moment when darkness is still present but has lost authority. That is the exact tantric moment for a sadhaka facing the ten heads.
Devasura namaskritam: both deva and asura bow to him. Light does not take sides, it reveals. This trains the sadhaka to see his own lust and anger without flinching.
Target: Ajna chakra, the power of darshana. Vritti: viparyaya, distorted perception.
- You are not fighting an outsider
Sarva devatmako hyesha tejasvi rashmi bhavanah |
Esha devasura ganan lokan pati gabhastibhih ||
He is sarva devatmaka, the Self of all gods. Tantrically: all your inner deities, sight, hearing, speech, digestion, are only rays of one fire. Ravana divided them into ten heads. Surya re-collects them into one mandala.
This verse rebuilds aham from fragmented ego into solar ego: “I am the holder of powers, not their slave.”
Target: Vishuddha to Ajna bridge. Vikaras: indriya-bheda, the split that creates kama and lobha.
Esha brahma cha vishnushcha shivah skandah prajapatih |
Mahendro dhanadah kalo yamah somo hyapam patih ||
Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva are named as him. Creation, preservation, destruction are solar functions. In the body: Brahma is the generative fire of Svadhisthana, Vishnu the sustaining heart, Shiva the dissolving stillness of Sahasrara.
Ravana worshipped Shiva as other. Ram is taught to recognize Shiva as his own inner sun. No duality left to exploit.
Target: All chakras in one sweep, dissolving sectarian inner conflict.
- The great name mandala, the real kavacha
This is the heart of the tantric work. Each name is a rashmi, a ray placed on a vritti.
Adityah savita suryah khagah pushah gabhastiman |
Suvarna sadrisho bhanuh hiranyareta divakarah ||
Aditya (son of Aditi, the undivided), Savita (the impeller), Surya (the one who pushes forward), Pusha (nourisher), Gabhastiman (rayed). Hiranyareta: golden seed.
Tantra: this set kindles Manipura. Suvarna sadrisha is the golden hue seen in dhyana when Samana is balanced. It burns lobha and kama by digestion. You do not suppress desire, you cook it into tejas.
Haridashvah sahasrarchih saptasapti marichiman |
Timironmanthana shambhuh tvasta martanda amshuman ||
Haridashva: whose horses are green rays. Saptasapti: seven times seven. The seven horses are the seven chakras, also the seven dhatus, seven pranas. The chariot is the body. If the horses run toward objects, they become Ravana’s heads. If they are reined by Surya, they become kavacha.
Timironmanthana: churner of darkness. Not remover, churner. Tamas must be churned like curd to get butter.
Target: Muladhara to Sahasrara as a column. Vritti: alasya, tandra, tamas.
Hiranyagarbhah shishirah tapano bhaskaro ravih |
Agnigarbho diteh putrah shankhah shishira nashanah ||
He is both shishirah (cool) and tapana (burning). This is crucial tantric balance. Solar sadhana without coolness becomes krodha. Surya contains Soma. The kavacha is not angry heat, it is clear heat.
Shishira nashana: destroyer of inner frost, the coldness of matsarya, envy, and hridaya-stambha, emotional numbness.
Target: Svadhisthana and Anahata. Vikaras burned: krodha, matsarya, dwesha.
- The surrender of time and direction
Vyomanathah tamobhedi rig yajuh sama paraga |
Ghana vrishthirapam mitro vindhya vithi plavangamaha ||
Rig yajuh sama paraga: he who has gone beyond the three Vedas. Even mantra becomes silent in pure seeing. Tamobhedi: piercer of darkness.
Tantrically, this seals the dishas, the directions. A kavacha is incomplete if the back is open. By naming him lord of sky, rain, Vedas, the sadhaka closes fear from past (rig), present (yajus), future (sama).
Target: Manomaya kosha. Vritti: bhaya, future anxiety.
Nakshatra graha taranam adhipo vishva bhavanah |
Tejasamapi tejasvi dvadash atman namostute ||
Lord of nakshatras and grahas. In jyotish-tantra, grahas are inner grabbers, compulsive patterns. Surya as adhipa means awareness becomes stronger than compulsion. Dvadash atman: the twelve forms, the twelve months, the twelve nerve plexuses around the heart. Salutation here is atma-samarpana, handing the fragmented self to the whole.
- Prostration as digbandhana
Namah purvaya giraye pashchimayadraye namah |
Jyotirgananam pataye dinadhipataye namah ||
Jayaya jaya bhadraya haryashvaya namo namah |
Namo namah sahasramsho adityaya namo namah ||
Repeated namah is not flattery. In tantra, namaskara is the deliberate dissolution of ahamkara. Each direction is sealed: east (beginning), west (ending), lord of luminaries, lord of day.
Jayaya jaya bhadraya: victory to the auspicious victory. You bow to the victory principle itself, not to your personal win. This prevents mada and darpa from regrowing after Ravana falls. Many sadhakas kill one ego and grow a spiritual ego. This verse prevents that.
Target: Sahasrara, dissolution of doership. Vikaras: mada, dambha, ahamkara.
Nama ugraya viraya sarangaya namo namah |
Namah padma prabodhaya martandaya namo namah ||
Ugraya viraya: fierce and heroic. Padma prabodhaya: awakener of the lotus. The heart lotus only opens to fierce grace, not to soft consolation. This is the moment the kavacha becomes active: softness would leave the ten heads intact, fierceness awakens.
Target: Anahata padma. Vritti: moha, sentimental attachment.
- The alchemy of destruction and creation
Tamoghnaya himaghnaya shatrughnaya amit atmane |
Kritaghagnaya devaya jyotisham pataye namah ||
Tamoghnaya: killer of darkness, himaghnaya: killer of frost, shatrughnaya: killer of enemies. Then the most tantric word: kritaghagnaya, killer of ingratitude, the vritti that forgets the source. Ravana’s root sin was kritaghna: he received Vedas and boons and used them against dharma.
Target: Ajna and Hridaya. Vikaras: asuya, kritaghnata, the cold intellect.
Tapta chamikarabhaya vahnaye vishva karmine |
Namas tamo’bhinighnaya ruchaye loka sakshine ||
Like molten gold. Vishva karmine: maker of the universe. Loka sakshine: witness of worlds. The sadhaka is taught to become witness while burning. This is tapas without self torture.
- The secret of constant awareness
Nashayatyesha vai bhutam tadeva srijati prabhuh |
Payatyesha tapatyesha varshatyesha gabhastibhih ||
He destroys beings and he creates them. He nourishes, heats, rains. One sun does all.
Tantric reading: your awareness must learn to do the same to vrittis. Nashayati: let a vikara die. Srijati: let a pure vritti be reborn. Do not cling to either function.
Esha supteshu jagarti bhuteshu parinishthitah |
Esha chaivagnihotram cha phalam chaivagnihotrinam ||
He is awake in the sleeping. This is turiya in seed form. The kavacha works even when you are not chanting, because the sun you installed in the heart does not sleep when the mind sleeps. This is why it is called Hridaya, not Stotra. A stotra ends. A hridaya remains.
Target: Chitta, the storehouse of samskaras where Ravana’s heads regrow.
- The seal for battle
Enam apatsu krichchreshu kantareshu bhayeshu cha |
Kirtayan purushah kashchin navashidati raghava ||
Agastya promises: in apat, krichchhra, kantara (forest, symbol for the tangled nadis), in bhaya, one who kirtans this does not sink.
Note kirtayan, not pathan. Patha is reading. Kirtana is vibrating. The kavacha is sonic.
Pujayasvainam ekagro deva devam jagatpatim |
Etat trigunitam japtva yuddheshu vijayishyasi ||
Ekagra: one pointed. Trigunitam: three times. Three is body, speech, mind. Or Ida, Pingala, Sushumna. Chant until all three agree.
Target: Integration of tri-nadi. This is the final knot of the kavacha.
- The result
Etachchrutva mahateja nashta shoko’bhavat tada |
Dharayamasa suprito raghavah prayatatmavan ||
nashta shokah: grief destroyed. Not suppressed, destroyed by tejas. Ram dharayamasa, he held it, he retained it. In tantra, dharana is the real initiation. Hearing is not enough.
Adityam prekshya japtvedam param harshamavaptavan |
Trirachamya shuchir bhutva dhanuradaya viryavan ||
He sips water thrice, becomes shuchi, pure, takes up the bow with virya. Purity here is nervous system clarity. Then, and only then: Ravanam prekshya hrishtatma, he looks at Ravana with a joyful self. Fear is gone, so perception is clean. The arrow can now find the heart, not just the heads.
That is the whole tantra in one line: burn the ten vikaras not by hating them, but by becoming too luminous for them to rule.
If you want to practice this, start small and traditional: face east at sunrise, three slow recitations with attention locked in the center of the chest, not on the outer sun. Let each namah be an exhale that drops the shoulders. That alone begins to build the Surya mandala Agastya spoke of.
