Borrowed bhakti is not false, it is just unripened. Everyone begins by hearing someone else sing.

In our tradition, shravana was always the first step. We hear a kirtan, we read a chalisa someone else wrote, we repeat a name someone else loved first. That is not wrong. How else would the lamp pass from hand to hand?

When Borrowing Becomes Stopping

The trouble begins when we stop at borrowing. When being a bhakt becomes an identity to claim rather than a fire to enter.

It is comfortable to recite what others realized. It asks nothing of us except memory. But bhakti was never meant to be a collection. It was meant to be a dissolution.

Why Books Comfort and Sadhana Confronts

Books are plenty because reading is safe. You can close a book whenever it challenges you too deeply.

Sadhana lives with very few because you cannot close it once it begins. It starts reading you. It shows you where your devotion is still performance, where your surrender still has conditions, where your love still wants applause.

Interpretation is rare not for lack of intelligence, but for lack of inner digestion. Manana and nididhyasana take time. They take silence. They take the courage to sit with one line for years until it breaks open.

Who Can Write a Chalisa

To write a chalisa, a stuti, a true shruti, is not a literary act.

Tulsidas, Surdas, Meera, they were not trying to be poets. They were trying to contain something that refused to stay contained. The verse overflowed because the heart could no longer hold it.

That is why you feel the difference instantly. One verse is constructed. The other is dissolved. In one, the author is present and clever. In the other, the author is gone and only the beloved remains in the sound.

How many can do this? Only those willing to disappear into what they love. The ego that wants to be called bhakt must step aside for the bhakti to become real.

What Is Source Other Than Brahman

People ask for the source of knowledge because the mind wants an authority outside itself. If it is in a book, with a page number and a footnote, the mind can believe without transforming.

But shruti never meant “written by someone reliable.” It meant “heard” in that depth where the mind becomes still enough to listen.

Heard from where, if not from Brahman itself?

Brahman is not one source among many. It is that which makes knowing possible at all. Books point. The guru points. Tradition points. But the dissolution you speak of, where the knower, the known and the knowing become one, that is the only pramana that does not borrow.
