Maa Chowdeshwari: Fierce Mother, Tantrik Guardian

(I haven’t done any sadhna of hers. But the word Ma is like a beej mantra for me. This blog is purely research based.)

Maa Chowdeshwari is worshipped as a fierce form of Parvati, the Kuladevi of Devangas, Nandavarik Brahmins and Togataveeras. She is loved as mother, feared as Mahamardini, and trusted as guardian in dark times.

Legends: At Nandavara on the Tunga, she came as witness when the king forgot his promise to Brahmins, and became their Kuladevata. For the Devangas, she killed demons attacking Sage Devala and asked to be worshipped on Amavasya. In Tantrik lore, she emerged from a rock box touched by Shiva’s sweat, riding a lion with trishul, and destroyed five boon protected demons.

Tantrik Swaroop: She is invoked as Viraat Rupaya Mahamardini, the vast cosmic destroyer of evil. Her moola mantra is Om Sri Sri Sri Viraat Rupaya Mahamardini Tanno Chowdeshwari Prachodayat. It is chanted for protection, courage, removal of negativity and inner strength. At Dasarighatta she sits on an anthill, a living Shakti sthana.

Astrology: Amavasya worship supports mental clarity and Pitru shanti. Her anthill shrines link her to Rahu Ketu and Naga Dosha remedies. Tuesdays and Fridays are ideal days. During Shani Sade Sati or Rahu periods, devotees seek her as kavach from fear, theft and evil eye.

Temples: Sigandur in Shivamogga on the Sharavathi is most famous. Nandavara is the moola sthana. Dasarighatta and Mathikere Bengaluru, where she is known as Sevakara Sevaki who answers on a slate, are also key.

Jai Maa Chowdeshwari.
