The Yogini temple has no roof because the sky is its crown.
At Hirapur and the other stone circles of early medieval India, sixty-four mothers sit shoulder to shoulder in the open air. They are not slender. They are not shy. Their full bellies, breasts and thighs planted on beasts and demons were never about being looked at. It was about being able to hold.
In Tantra, a woman’s body which could conceive, bleed, and nourish was read as a living yantra. Fertility meant power to transform substance, blood into milk, food into consciousness, desire into clarity. The sculptors carved capacity, not modern fantasy.
The Chosen, Not the Crowd
Tantra was not public religion. It was adhikara, qualification through preparation. A yogini was recognized by a guru who could read her devi tattva, the Goddess-principle active in her. In Kaula lineages, body rhythm became symbolic language. A fierce gaze might mark a Kali-tattva yogini who dissolves. A steady, broad pelvis might mark a Lakshmi-tattva yogini who sustains.
The yoni was not reduced to anatomy. It was signature of origin. The texts speak of yoni-bheda, differentiation by source. To know it was to know which mantra would awaken in her mouth, which yantra would steady her heart, which planet would bow to her discipline.
Devi as Cosmos
The sixty-four are not rivals. They are one Devi refracted into kalas, digits of power. Together they form the mandala, nurturing and severing. In the center often sits Bhairava or Kali, reminding that mind must surrender to heart for the circle to turn.
The Astrology of the Secret Circle
Tantric astrology begins with correspondence, not prediction. Sun is Atman, the witness. Moon is Chitta, where Yoginis live, hence these are lunar temples most active on amavasya.
Moon holds sixteen kalas multiplied to sixty-four, each tithi served by Yoginis. Venus and Moon govern the soma-rich currents of art and attraction, the Matangi current. Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu govern the fierce ones who cut attachment. Jupiter governs the guru-yoginis who decide readiness. Mercury governs speech.
A sadhaka would not ask what will happen, but which Yogini is awake in my chart, and which Devi must I become to meet her. Saturn affliction, for example, was invitation to the Dharma-Shasta current of discipline and service.
The planets are not rocks in the sky. They are moods of the Devi looking at you.
Return to the Body
Modern eyes misread these temples as erotic. The initiates would have laughed. Eroticism consumes. Tantra contains. The Yogini’s body cannot be copied by pose. It ripens by practice, by breath held in attention until you hear which Goddess whispers, as the old texts say of Matangi. Fertility is not a shape. It is power to let the cosmos pass through you and leave you whole.
