Polytheism vs Monotheism

Non-Sanatanis often mock us Sanatanis for the fact that we worship many Gods. Many of these are human, human-like, animals, fish, birds, as well as natural elements like water, air, fire, earth and skies. We also worship the nine planets; in fact, we worship the entire universe including the Sun as Surya Devta.

One basic reason why they can’t understand our multiple Gods is that almost all of the other religions are based on the teachings of one person. The religions that have come from the Middle East are from one source or one family – Judaism, Christianity and Islam among them come from various cousins to each other. They can all be called cults devoted to one single person.

So, while all the other religions have a prophet, Sanatan doesn’t have one. The panths that emerged from Sanatan – Sikhism, Buddhism & Jainism too don’t have a prophet. Sikhs have ten Gurus yet the foremost devotion is for Granth Sahib which is a compilation of the teachings of the gurus. Jainism & Buddhism have Mahavir & Gautam Buddha as the principal leaders of these panths yet they are not regarded as prophets by the followers of these panths.

Sanatan is the only Dharma across the world; its is about duties as against the religions that are about rights. And that is the primary difference between Sanatan and the religions – i.e., duties vs rights.

Everything in Sanatan is described as a duty; from Raj Dharma to Pitra Dharm, Putra Dharm, Stree Dharm, Purush Dharm and so on. If you look closely, Sanatan emerged from human curiosity about the world around us, which is why everything around us became an object worthy of devotion.
Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh are our three principal deities; Brahma is the creator and Vishnu as well as Mahesh are ones that carry out the various leelas in the world; leelas, for simpler understanding, could be called actions or acts. Which is perhaps why Bhagwan Vishnu has Dashavatara or ten incarnations.
These ten avatars are: Matsya (Fish), Kurma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha (Man-Lion), Vamana (Dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki. They are believed to have descended on earth to restore cosmic order and protect the righteous.

Compare the above list of the ten avatars with the way the world has evolved, as per Darwin’s theory of evolution. These avatars are the same as described in Darwin’s theory. It can’t be a mere coincidence; our Rishis & Munis knew the universe better and much before the rest of the world understood it.
Galileo, known as the father of modern astronomy was the first one in the modern world to say that the earth is round; but when our Rishis & Munis studied Geography in the ancient times, they called it Bhoogol. They knew that the earth is round millions of years ago.
To that end, our Rishis & Munis were not Sadhus as we understand the word in today’s times; they were scientists and scholars who gave us the sciences as well as the other fields of study. Our Vedas are not holy books as religions of the world understand the meaning of the word “Holy.”
We call our Vedas “Holy” because for us the knowledge is sacred; not because they are the words of a prophet. The Holy Vedas were not written by one person; they were written by women and men over a period of time and were thus treatises on different streams of sciences and arts.
Which is why we have Yog Vidya, Tantra Vidya, Shree Vidya as well as Sangeet Vidya and much more. Everything, for us, was a field of study and pursuit of each of us was Sadhna. Today, Sadhna is equated with Puja-Path by the man on the street. Strange, but true.
Which is why most people fail to understand descriptions like Yog Sadhak or Tantra Sadhak and all of these are not seen as Vidyas or streams of knowledge meant for the benefit of humankind. The tragedy of it all is that Yoga is now seen as physical exercise like gym training of the west and Tantra is Jadoo-Tona or Black Magic.

The true Sanatani mind must get rid of such confining definitions imposed on us by the west.
