The Black Sun: The Tantric Meaning of Krishna and 7 Steps Towards Him

In bhakti, Krishna is the Beloved you worship. In Tantra, Krishna is the Awareness that worships through you.

He is not just the flute-player of Vrindavan. In the Tantric vision he is Shaktiman — the holder of Shakti — inseparable from Radha, Kali, and Lalita-Tripurasundari. To approach him is not to go outward to a temple, but inward to the place where consciousness and energy meet.

  1. Krishna as the Goddess in Male Form

Tantra delights in dissolving our neat categories. Several Tantras say Kali manifests through Krishna — both are black, both are beyond time.

The Tantraraja Tantra (34/11) states it directly:

kadacid adya lalita pumrupa krishna-vigraha — “Sometimes the primordial Lalita appears in the masculine form of Krishna.”

In this reading, Krishna’s dark skin is not a complexion. It is the same darkness as Kali: the void, the unconditioned, the fullness that remains when all forms dissolve. When through Srikula you experience that fullness, you are freed from the limits of time — which is Kali’s domain.

  1. Krishna as the Kaula Sadhaka

The Radha Tantra, a Kaula text, flips the story we know.

Vishnu, by the grace of Tripurasundari, becomes embodied as Krishna. Lakshmi becomes Radha — herself a form of Tripurasundari. Together they worship Kali and Kamakhya. Krishna invokes Kali into Radha’s body.

And because of this kaula-sadhana, the text says, Krishna attained all siddhis. His lilas are not just miracles; they are the fruits of Shakti-upasana. Even the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is found here, showing how mantra bridges bhakti and Tantra.

The union of Krishna and Radha is called Shakti-Yoga — the merging of Chit (consciousness) with Shakti (power).

  1. Krishna as Your Inner Consciousness

Tantra always reads the outer story as an inner map.

The Radha Tantra gives meditations locating sacred places in your own body — Govardhan Hill in sahasrara-chakra, for example — and speaks of kula-kundalini awakening.

Even the name points inward. In the Rigvedic layer, krishna is the dark period (night) and arjuna the bright (day). The yogi’s real Mahabharata is to transcend both — to rest in the turiya that watches waking and sleeping come and go.

Krishna, then, is that dark, blissful awareness. Radha is the kundalini-Shakti that rises to meet him.

Bhakti reaches Krishna through love for him. Tantra reaches him by becoming the Shakti that makes him Krishna.

7 Steps Towards Him: A Tantric Contemplation

Note: Tantra traditionally requires diksha from a living guru. Take these as contemplations for understanding, not as initiation.

  1. Deha-shuddhi — Make the body a yantra

Tantra begins with tanu, the body. Sit quietly and practice bhuta-shuddhi: breathe slowly and mentally dissolve earth, water, fire, air, and space back into Shakti, then rebuild your body as a temple. You are not yet worshipping an outer god; you are cleaning the vessel.

  1. Karna-shuddhi — Learn to truly hear the mantra

The Radha Tantra stresses purification of hearing — the capacity to really receive mantra. Choose one: Klim Krishnaya Namah or the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Repeat it slowly, not for count but for listening. Let the vibration settle in the heart before you chase its meaning.

  1. Bahya-upasana — See Krishna as Kali

In outer worship, hold the non-dual bhavana: this dark Krishna is dark Kali. This blissful boy is Lalita-Tripurasundari in male form. Offer flower, lamp, water to his image while remembering: the form is male, the power is Goddess.

  1. Antarmukha — Build Vrindavan inside

Turn pilgrimage inward. Visualize Yamuna as sushumna, the central channel. Vrindavan as the heart-lotus. Govardhan as the crown. See Radha as red kundalini rising from muladhara to meet Krishna as pure consciousness above. You are no longer imagining a story; you are mapping energy.

  1. Shakti-Yoga — Unite the pair

This is the heart of the practice. On the inhale, feel Shakti (Radha) rising. On the exhale, feel Consciousness (Krishna) pervading downward. Rest in their embrace at the heart center. When bliss arises without effort, you are close.

  1. Rasa — Let love become non-duality

Tantra takes madhurya-bhava to its limit: the lover dissolves into the Beloved. Let the ecstatic love of Radha-Krishna become a metaphor for subject-object collapse. No worshipper remains, only lila — one awareness delighting in itself.

  1. Laya — Rest in the Black

Finally, let go even of Radha and Krishna as forms. Remain as krishna itself — karshati iti krishna, “the all-attracting one.” Beyond krishna (night) and arjuna (day), beyond mantra and yantra. Just the black sun of awareness, still and luminous.

—

Tantra does not replace Krishna the cowherd with an abstraction. It reveals him more fully: as lover, as Goddess, as sadhaka, and as your own deepest Self.

If this path calls you, seek a qualified guru in the Sri-Kula or Kali-Kula lineages to take you further. Until then, let every japa be a step toward that Black Sun.
