Shiva is never alone in Tantra. He becomes five, and the five only live when she moves through them.
These are the Panchabrahma, the five faces of Sadashiva. They are five powers of one consciousness: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment and grace.
Sadyojata, west, earth: creation through Kriya Shakti, the power to act and begin
Vamadeva, north, water: preservation through Jnana Shakti, the power to know and sustain
Aghora, south, fire: dissolution through Iccha Shakti, the fierce will that burns and renews
Tatpurusha, east, air: concealment, the breath of life that makes us feel separate
Ishana, upward, ether: revealing grace, the clear light beyond form
Without Devi, Shiva is Shava
Tantra is direct: each power is Shakti. Without her, Shiva is a corpse.
That is why Shaktism names the five as Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Ishvara and Sadashiva, and places Lalita Tripurasundari above them. She sits on the Panchabrahmasana, the throne whose legs are these five gods.
The Lalita Sahasranama calls her Pancha-preta-asana-asina, she who sits on five corpses. They are corpses because they are imagined without their Shakti. Brahma can create, Vishnu can protect, Rudra can dissolve, Ishvara can conceal and Sadashiva can grace only when she animates them.
What it means
In practice this is a map of you. You create, you sustain, you destroy habits, you forget, you suddenly remember with grace. Shaiva nyasa awakens these five in the body. Sri Vidya asks you to see the one awareness, Devi as Chit, behind all five.
Shiva gives structure. Devi gives life.
