He came as a boy small enough to be ignored, and left as Trivikrama large enough to contain all worlds. The outer story is simple, the inner is pure Tantra.
Bali, grandson of Prahlada, had taken the three worlds. He was daanveer but his generosity carried the pride of the possessor. Vishnu came as a dwarf brahmachari and asked for three paces. Shukracharya warned: this is Vishnu, do not promise. Bali promised.
In two steps Vamana covered earth and heaven. For the third, only Bali remained. He offered his head. Vamana placed his charana on it, sent him to Sutala in grace, and blessed him as Chiranjeevi and future Indra. Generosity without Dharma is not counted.
The Esoteric Dwarf
The Katha Upanishad calls the Self angushtha matra purusha, the thumb sized person in the heart. That is Vamana. Tantra hides the infinite in the minute. The dwarf is the bindu before expansion. Surrendered to Dharma, it becomes Trivikrama. Small does not become big, it reveals it was always big.
The Three Steps Are You
Trivikrama never walks outside you. The steps are Bhuh, Bhuvah, Svah: body, prana, mind. They are jagrat, svapna, sushupti. In Kundalini they are the three granthis, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, pierced as he rises through sushumna. Bali thought he owned three worlds. Vamana showed the fourth was his own ahamkara, which had to be offered.
Tantric Astrology: Jupiter and Shravana
In Jyotisha Vamana is Jupiter, Guru of devas. Jupiter is dharmic expansion, faith and right giving. Afflicted Jupiter is Bali’s disease: giving to be seen as great. Shukra gives lavishness, only Guru gives wisdom to give correctly.
His star is Shravana. Its devata is Vishnu as Trivikrama, its symbol three footprints, its siddhi shravana shakti, divine listening. This is Shruti, the Veda heard in samadhi, the mantra received whole when mind is like deep water. As Nagas rule Patala in silence, in depth hearing becomes perfect. Bali had a guru but did not practice shravana. Vamana came to restore true listening. When Jupiter is strong, mantras come to you.
His Mahavidya: Bhuvaneshwari
Todala Tantra maps Bhuvaneshwari to Vamana. She is Space as Mother, Queen of bhuvanas. He measures Space in three strides. The avatar reclaimed the worlds for their Queen. When inner Bali tries to possess through egoic virtue, she returns them to Dharma.
Why the Foot Fell on the Head
This is charana deeksha. The head is ahamkara, the foot is grace. It was not punishment but initiation, Kundalini rising from Patala, where Nagas coil, to Sahasrara. Bali ceased to be donor and became devotee, and so will rise.
Give, but offer the giver also. Listen in the depths until the mantra hears you. When the Guru’s foot touches the head, do not move. That pressure is liberation. It is the shortest path from possession to freedom.
