In classical jyotish Rahu and Ketu are called shadow planets. In Tantra they are called the serpent.

“Rahu as the Vahan, Ketu as the Tail: A Tantrik Way to Read the Nodes”

Most charts read Rahu as obsession and Ketu as detachment. That is true but only the outer layer. Tantra looks deeper. It sees one serpent cut in two, the head that hungers and the tail that remembers.

The serpent cut in two

Rahu is a head without a body. It can see, desire and chase, but it can never feel full. Ketu is a body without a head.

Together they are Kundalini in its unawakened form, split between hunger and memory. Sadhana is the art of joining them again.

Rahu: the soul of the vahan

No devata comes on foot. Durga rides the lion, Vishnu rides Garuda, Bhairav rides the dog. The vahan is not a symbol. It is the power that can bear the weight of the deity in this world.

Tantriks say Rahu is the vahan of your soul in your chart. Its rashi shows the nature of the animal. Fiery rashis give a restless, galloping vahan. Earthy rashis give a patient one. Its house shows the field where it wants to run, artha, kama, dharma or moksha.

A hungry head without direction will eat the sadhak. The same head given a deity to gaze at becomes a vehicle. This is why Tantra does not suppress Rahu. It gives it a master.

Ketu: the tail you drag

If Rahu is what carries you forward, Ketu is what follows you. A tail does not lead, it balances and it remembers. It holds the samskaras of past effort, past siddhi and past failure. When you try to turn quickly in life, it whips. You feel it as sudden disinterest, as a pull to withdraw.

Where Rahu says “more,” Ketu says “already done.” That is why Ketu is linked to moksha. In the body, Ketu is the base of the spine, coiled until ready.

How to read them together

Forget good and bad. Ask instead, are they yoked.

Rahu’s house is your engine room. That is where your vahan wants to run. Learn to ride there, not blindfold the animal.
Ketu’s house is your storage room. That is what you drag. Empty it through surrender and seva.
Rahu aspecting your Ishta’s graha gives swift mantra siddhi, but demands stronger niyama. Speed without discipline scatters.

When the head looks at the Ishta and the tail is untangled, the serpent stops biting itself and begins to rise.

Yoking head and tail

Tantra never advises cutting the tail or starving the head. It advises training. Rahu is trained by direction. One Ishta, one mantra, one vow for a fixed period. Ketu is trained by release. Give away what you no longer need, complete what you left half done.

When both are honored, Rahu becomes Garuda, the eagle that can carry Vishnu, and Ketu becomes the still tail that steadies flight. The vahan no longer runs wild. It carries you home.
