The Discus and the Trident: Vishnu’s Sudarshan and Shiva’s Trishul in Tantrik Astrology
Most jyotish columns list fifty yogas, but you will not find Sudarshan and Trishul among them. In Tantra they were never yogas. They are bandhas, knots when a chart leans to stillness or movement.
Tantra sees the kundali as two wills. Vishnu wants to preserve. Shiva wants to dissolve. The Sudarshan Chakra is the will to preserve. The Trishul is the will to dissolve. Know which dominates, and you know what your sadhana is trying to do.
They are not yogas, they are bandhas
A yoga is two grahas joining. A bandha is a pattern across the whole chart. The fixed signs, Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha, were called the Vishnu chakra. The movable signs, Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara, were called the Shiva trishul. It is not about one yoga, but where your consciousness clusters.
Sudarshan: the stillness that protects
Sudarshan means auspicious vision, the discus that spins without wobbling. It shows as emphasis on sthira rashis, with Jupiter or Mercury strong in kendra or trikona from Lagna, Moon or Atmakaraka. Parashara’s method reads Lagna, Surya Lagna and Chandra Lagna together. When guarded by benefics, the jiva is encircled and protected.
Such people hold. They hold a mantra for years, hold a vow, hold dharma without breaking. Sadhana is slow, stabilizing. Shadow is rigidity. In devata language, Jupiter as Vishnu gives faith, Mercury as Vishnu gives clarity.
Trishul: the movement that cuts
The Trishul has three prongs because it pierces the three gunas, the three times, the three nadis. It shows as emphasis on chara rashis, with Saturn, Mars or Ketu in kendra. Moon with Saturn or Ketu in a movable sign, or four grahas in chara rashis, is read as Shamshan shakti.
Such people cannot stay still. Life moves them through breaks, journeys, initiations. They are drawn to Kali, Bhairav, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati from recognition of impermanence. Sadhana is intense and cutting. Shadow is restlessness. Saturn is Kala, Mars is Rudra, Ketu is the urge beyond form.
When both live in one chart
Rare charts balance both. Lagna or Jupiter anchored in sthira while Moon or Saturn-Ketu stands strong in chara. Tantra calls this Hari-Hara. Vishnu holds the center while Shiva burns the periphery. Such a person can do Tripura Sundari in the morning and Kali at night. It is a double test: protect what you love and sacrifice what you cling to.
How to see it
Count grahas in sthira vs chara. See where Lagna, Moon and Atmakaraka sit. Jupiter and Mercury in kendra strengthen the discus. Saturn, Mars and Ketu in kendra sharpen the trident. Sudarshan grows by regularity: one mantra, one time, one asana. Trishul is honored by surrender.
If you carry the discus, learn to let go. If you carry the trident, learn to stay. If both, learn moment by moment which god should hold the weapon.
