The Two Generals: Varahi and Baglamukhi, The Mars Shaktis of Srividya

Every queen needs a general. In Srividya the queen is Lalita Tripurasundari, and in the Lalitopakhyana her Shri Chakra becomes a battlefield against Bhandasura. There the two most martial goddesses of the tradition reveal themselves.

Tantra calls Mars the senapati of the grahas. Naturally his shaktis are senapatis among the devis.

1. Varahi: The Commander in Chief

In classical Srividya there is one Senapati: Varahi.

Matangi is Mantrini, the prime minister, mistress of mantra and counsel. Varahi is Dandanayika, lady of the staff, commander of the armies. Dark as night, riding a buffalo, musala and hala in hand, she leads the shaktis into the field. She plans, she punishes, she endures.

She is the boar faced earth power, shakti of Varaha. Not momentary anger, but sustained righteous anger that protects dharma over a long campaign. Her war is outward and strategic.

2. Baglamukhi: The Other Senapati

Baglamukhi belongs to the ten Mahavidyas as the eighth. Pitambara, clad in yellow, one hand pulls the tongue of the enemy, the other holds the club.

She is not Lalita’s general in the texts, but in upasana she functions as one. Where Varahi leads an army, Baglamukhi stops an army alone. Her siddhi is stambhana, paralysis. She freezes speech, thought and movement at the root.

Sadhakas invoke her when the hostile current must be halted immediately. Her war is inward and surgical.

3. Why Mars Links Them Both

In tantric jyotish Mars, Mangal or Kuja, is virya itself. Blood, courage, kshatriya fire, the celibate warrior who serves without seeking the throne.

Todala Tantra is explicit: Baglamukhi is the Mars Mahavidya. Varahi is linked to Mars by function: the general, holder of danda, protector of bhumi, which Mars also signifies.

Both carry the same graha tattva, but split its work:

Varahi as Mars: danda. Boundary, territory, the long war for dharma. She steadies a weak Mars, giving ability to stand, to say no, to protect without cruelty.

Baglamukhi as Mars: stambhana. The sudden stop. Capture of vak, speech and intellect, the command centers of every enemy, outer or inner. She focuses an aggressive Mars, cooling raw anger into precise force.

4. Two Faces of One Fire

Together they complete the martial path.

Varahi teaches how to fight a campaign: discipline, strategy, loyalty to the queen within. Baglamukhi teaches how to end a fight before it begins: silence the inner critic, freeze the compulsive vritti, still the tongue of the demon in your mind.

Tantra sees them not as rivals but as complementary generals. One holds the field through the night. The other decides the battle in a single moment.

Lalita remains sweetness itself. But sweetness in this world needs guardians who wield the staff and still the tongue
